It is a bitter fact that failure, no matter how much you hate it, is a part of like. No ultimate achiever has reached their success without having failed at least once in their life. In fact, if you have never made a mistake or failed, then you are not trying hard enough. The only way to get the success you ever want is to push yourself harder to get out of your comfort zone. Thomas Jefferson has it that, “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” However, with that push for success comes the risk of failure.
If you are trying anything new, then you will inevitably face failure in one way or another. The important thing is that you accept it when it happens so that you will not be discouraged. These 5 keys will help you continue to succeed even when you have just failed miserably.
Take Some Time
When you fail, whether it is at home, work, school, or personal, don’t expect to just move on as if nothing happened. You need to take sometime to react to your failure. How large or small your mistake was will determine how much time you need to recover.
If it’s small, maybe you only need an hour. If it was big, maybe give yourself a whole day. It is totally fine to feel upset and disappointed when you make a mistake, just don’t let that mistake define who you are for the rest of your life. Set your time limit, feel what you need to feel, and then move on.
Look at Others
When you fail, you have a tendency to think that you are the only one to have this failure and your failure is the worst and most miserable one. The truth is that, everybody thinks this way. Remember that almost every successful person has failed at least once in their lives and many others have failed several times. We all know the famous stories of Steve Jobs’ and Walt Disney’s failures but look at where they eventually ended up.
People are more prone to talk about their successes rather than their failures. This makes you feel you are the only one making mistakes. This isn’t true. Keep in mind that and you will overcome your failure faster than you originally thought.
Definition of Failure
When you hear the word ‘failure,’ what do you think of? Your success depends on how you define failure. There are two definition we fall in when it comes to failure: one is it is an “end all, be all”, the other one is that it is a learning experience. Where do you fall?
If you fall in the first definition, then it is likely that you have a fixed mindset. People with the fixed mindset are negative about failure and think it defines them. To get yourself out of the grief over failure, try to switch to the other definition which means the growth mindset. People with the growth mindset think that failure is a great opportunity to learn from your mistakes and keep trying. Normally, we all have the tendency to exxagerate our own failure. But in fact, it is not as bad as we think it is. Finally, the more often you fail, the less you’ll be afraid of failing, which will actually improve your chances of success.
Start The Next Project
Making a mistake isn’t the end of the world. When you fail, do not think you are god-awful and let it stop you from moving forward. Even if your first idea didn’t succeed, maybe another one will. Make sure you have a second project or hobby as option B to focus your attention on when something goes wrong. One of the keys to succeeding after failing is to keep going and keep trying.
Remind Yourself of Past Successes
If you cannot get yourself out of the severe depress after a miserable failure, remind yourself of past successes. It can be a big or a small one. Think of the success that has made you proud of yourself, the success that you take pride in telling people. By doing this, you can start to push your self-confidence. It will also inspire you to continue trying especially after you’ve made a mistake.

There is an old saying that goes “ To err is human.” Failure is a part of life. Failure is indispensable. Most importantly, it is only failure that can bring you success.
