When it comes goal, the common scenario is people excitedly announce theirs on the first day, take massive actions some of the following days, gradually get discouraged and eventually give up on their goals. The world does not lack people who set goals. It just lacks people who do reach their goals. According to the University of Hertfordshire, 50% of people make meaningful New Year’s resolutions but a whopping 78% of them never actually reach that goal.
Why do people set goals but then give up? There are a mountain of reasons why people fail to stay focused and accomplish their goals. It could be a lack of motivation. It could be that you no longer consider the goal important. And it could be any of endless other reasons like emergenicies, family functions, work, technology, or any other number of things that could prevent you from focusing on your goals.
Everyone has a good reason to accomplish their goals in the beginning. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be setting them. But to eventually achieve your goal, you have to stay focused even when you get discouraged. This is quite hard. However, there are plenty of tips and techniques you can utilize to make it easier for you to stay focused on your goals and actually reach them.
Write Down Your Goals
Writing is super powerful practice. Once you write your goal down, you are half way successul in getting the goal achieved. It will have a more lasting effect on you and help you stay focused.
Moreover, when you write out your goal, it means that you are making them specific on paper. For sure you will write things like “My first goal is to accomplish X by this date”. Being specific really helps you focus on what you actually want and helps you actually accomplish your goals.
After writing down your goal, you have a tendency to keep them handy. You can hang them up or place them on your desk, but remember to make them visible so that you can see them everyday.
However, despite of the fact that you write down your goal, remember to constantly remind yourself of focusing on your goal, otherwise you will soon forget them.
Narrow Your List
You can have one goal to reach. But it is often the case that you have more than one goal at one time. And they can make a mess in your head, driving you crazy. When that happens, you won’t actually reach any of them.
The most effective solution to this is to narrow your list. Although you may find it difficult to prioritize which goal is the most important one to focus on at the current time, narrowing your list if you want to accomplish any of your goals, at all.
You can start by choosing at most three goals to work on at a time. You can choose less, if you want. Once you have the list of your three most important goals, focus on them but don’t throw away the others. Put them on a “someday” list. That will give you more motivation to focus on your current goals and accomplish them so you can eventually move on to the others.
If your goals are too big and there’s no way to reach them, you need to create mini-goals to reach your ultimate goal.
More particularly, it means that breaking down your goals into steps. If your goal is to learn how to play the piano, then set up the necessary steps. For example, Step 1: learn the names of the notes, Step 2: learn the types of notes, Step 3: practice scales, and so on.
By this way, you’ll feel less overwhelmed. It’s easier to focus in on one small thing at a time, rather than trying to reach the big picture immediately. By completing small steps at a time, you will stay motivated and maintain your enthusiasm for your ultimate goal.
If you want to be successful, then you have to stay focused and accomplish your goals. To prevent yourself from getting discouraged and give up on your goal like too many people out there, you can follow these tips: writing your goals down, narrowing your list, and creating mini-goals. They help you stay motivated and enthusiastic about reaching your goals and won’t be one of the 78% that never get past the planning stage.
Don’t wait for the perfect moment, decide what your goals are today and begin working towards them. The sooner you do, then the sooner you will actually accomplish them.
